Abia Speaker describes late Ogunji as a good party man

The Abia State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Orji has described late Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Solomon Ogunji as a loyal party man.

This is even as the state government has revealed that Ogunji died as a result of High Blood Pressure on Saturday, contrary to speculations that he (Ogunji) died on Sunday.

Orji in a Press statement on Sunday said that that state was pained by the death of a man that he said distinguished himself in his service to the state.

The Speaker who went further to state that the state would miss him (Ogunji), prayed God to give the family and others affected by his death the fortitude to bear the loss.

“It was with shock that we received the sad news of the demise of my good friend and the Honorable Commissioner for Environment in Abia State, Dr Solomon Ogunji, who passed on after a brief illness at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital,  Aba, on Saturday, 23rd May, 2020.

“Dr Ogunji served our dear state meritoriously in various capacities and was a loyal party man who was also close to me and my family. We will surely miss him even as we pray for his family and the loved ones he left behind to be granted the fortitude to bear this painful loss.

“All of us at the Abia State House of Assembly mourn with his family, his community, the good people of Abia State and members of the state executive council led by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu; we pray God to give us all the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

“May his soul rest In peace.”

The State Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi-Kalu in a release while giving more details on the late Commissioner for Environment disclosed that he died at the Abia State Teaching Hospital Aba after a brief illness associated with High Blood Pressure.

“It is with great sadness and a deep sense of loss that we announce the demise of a member of Abia State Executive Council and the Honorable Commissioner for Environment, Dr Solomon Ogunji, who passed away on Saturday, 23rd May, 2020, at the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, after a brief illness related to high blood pressure.

“Abia State Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, who received the sad news with shock yesterday (Saturday) has personally communicated and condoled with the family of the bereaved and is currently in mourning.

“We pray that the Almighty God will give the family of Dr Ogunji the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and rest his soul in the bosom of the Lord,” Okiyi-Kalu’s Press statement read.

Ogunji who has been active in the government circles in the past 12 years has served in different capacities in the immediate past and present administrations in the state before his recent appointment as the Commissioner for Environment.

He is regarded as one of the powerful commissioners in the current government in the state. 

Dr. Ogunji was before his recent appointment as a commissioner was Special Adviser Political to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and also the chairman Abia Urban Renewal Committee. 

He was until his death, a member of the Abia State COVID-19 task force.

He was 2019 aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for Abia South Senatorial District, but lost to Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe in the party’s primaries.
