Secondary school students seek to eradicate plastic pollution

Members of the Students Advancement for Global Entrepreneurship (SAGE) team of University of Calabar International Demonstration Secondary School (UCIDSS) have expressed their determination work towards ensuring the eradication of plastic pollution in the country.

This was at they also said they were committed to emerging the overall best in the SAGE competition to be hosted in Abuja.

Team leader of the group known as The Craft House, Master Michael Bassey, a student, said they were adequately prepared face any challenge by other contingents.

He said they aimed to be overall best in the competition so as to enable them represent Nigeria at the international level and also make the school and Cross River State proud.

He said they have two main categories of activities, which include the Social Enterprise Business Category (SEB) and the Socially Responsible Business Category (SRB).

According to him these are geared towards the total eradication of plastic pollution in the world, through the recycling of plastic wastes as well as creating an alternative for epileptic power supply in the country by means of the same means of recycling plastic waste for electricity.

“Our project for the competition, the team has recycled plastic wastes such as waste banners, broken plastic buckets, plastic bottles, foil papers signal diodes, waste CD plates to produce solar dish inverter for power supply and other housing facilities. With these projects on plastic wastes recycling, the environment will get rid of plastic pollution which has caused a lot of health and environmental hazards to humanity,” he said.

The coordinator of the team, Mrs Kristy Oko expressed satisfaction with the level of preparation and commitment of the contingents having assessed their creative and innovative capacities.

The school principal, Mrs. Philomena Etta-Ekuri, charged her colleagues in other public and private schools to key into the SAGE competition because it is a laudable program that brings out the creative and innovative potentials of pupils, creates job opportunities, prepares pupils for future challenges and train them to be self reliant.

“The team is well prepared and there are wonderful, creative, innovative projects developed from the recycling of plastic wastes which will make them excel and be outstanding at the competition,” she said.
