The leadership of the Abia State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has postponed the governorship and House of Assembly primaries of the party in the state.

According to the timetable earlier released by the national leadership of the party, obtained by The Nation, the party disclosed that there would be Governorship and House of Assembly primaries of the party across the 36 states of the federation on May 27.

It was however gathered that the two days public holiday of Id el Kabir announced by the federal government was the major reason the party shifted the proposed Governorship and House of Assembly primaries of the party to hold on May, 30, 2026.

However, our correspondent who spoke to some members of the party in the state, reports that they raised the alarm that the Sit-At-Home as announced by the leadership of the Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) on May 30, in commemoration of the Biafra Heroes Remembrance Day may jeopardize the primaries as they feared that there would be limited vehicular movement and may put members on harm’s way.

It was gathered that the party planned to hold all the primaries; Governorship, House of Assembly, National Assembly (House of Representatives and Senate) and Presidential primaries on May, 30.

The venue of the primaries is said to be in Umuahia, the state capital, as the method of the primaries is said to be affirmative, which the party leadership said is in line with the Electoral Act and Electoral Guidelines.

In a telephone interview with the Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Mr. Emenike Iroegbu, Wednesday, he confirmed the shift in date.

On why the party decided to choose affirmation against Direct Primary process that most political parties have resorted to, Iroegbu disclosed that apart from Bende South State Constituency where the Direct Primary process would be adopted, the decision for affirmation process for other positions was because other aspirants were running unopposed.
