The ancient hills of Ugwu Nkpa community in Bende LGA rang with political affirmation on Sunday as Traditional Prime Minister, Prince Ugochukwu Onyenweaku, declared the community’s support for Labour Party and its chieftain, Dr. Chima Anyaso.
“For the single reason of visiting us yourself, Ugwu Nkpa will vote for you, Labour Party,” Prince Onyenweaku told a jubilant crowd at the Ugwu Nkpa Town Hall.
“We are not asking for bags of rice. We are not asking for noise on radio. Come, sit with our elders. Walk our roads. See our school. That is the currency we accept in Ugwu Nkpa.”
Dr. Anyaso, a prominent Labour Party leader in Abia North, was in Bende on a thank-you and consultation tour ahead of 2027.
He was received by traditional rulers, women’s groups, and youths with Labour Party flags and palm fronds.
“I did not come with a bag of promises,” Dr. Anyaso said. “I came because Bende deserves a representative who knows the name of your villages without reading from a paper.
“If you give Labour Party your mandate, we will prioritize primary healthcare, farm-to-market roads, and skills training for our young people here in Ugwu Nkpa and across Bende.”
Community leaders called the visit historic. It was the first time in more than a decade that a major party chieftain from outside the immediate council area addressed the town hall in person.
Mrs. Ngozi Kalu, leader of the Ugwu Nkpa Women’s Wing, said women would follow the traditional council’s lead. “When our father speaks, we listen,” she said.
Youths presented a charter of demands focusing on digital skills centers, support for cassava and palm oil processing, and rehabilitation of the Ugwu Nkpa–Alayi road, which cuts off farmers during rains.
Political observers note the endorsement matters beyond Ugwu Nkpa. With 13 wards, Bende remains a key battleground in Abia North where Labour Party made gains in 2023.
Prince Onyenweaku urged other communities to adopt the same standard: “Ask any candidate: have you come to us? Have you seen us? If the answer is no, then the answer from Ugwu Nkpa is also no.”

The event ended with prayers for peace and a cultural display. As Dr. Anyaso departed, residents lined the road chanting the Labour Party slogan. For Ugwu Nkpa, the message was clear: show up, and the votes will follow.
