Fire guts Girls’ Federal Government school in Abia State

One of the female hostels at the Federal Government Girls’ College located at Old Umuahia in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State being occupied by students of Green House have reportedly being gutted by a mysterious fire.

 

Our reporter gathered that over one hundred students occupying the hostel were lucky to have escaped being caught in the inferno as they were said to have being in the school studying while the fire incident lasted.

Though the amount of property damaged could not be ascertained at the time of filing this report, sources at the institution who craved anonymity told our reporter that the fire gutted students’ bunks, clothes, provisions and other valuables including monies before hitting the roof and other parts of the hostel.

According to the sources, while they wouldn’t want to preempt investigation of the Fire Service or any other government agency(ies), they suspected that the fire was caused by power surge and lamented that they could have stopped the inferno from having such damaging effect if they had noticed it early.

 

The sources who told our reporter that the latest fire incident was the third time the school was recording such a mishap where students lose their valuables and cash.

 

They said that they were able to quench the fire from spreading to other parts of the hostel, adding that the management of the school were already making arrangement to ensure that the affected roof would be fixed as soon as possible while the students whose bed spaces were affected would have a place to rest their heads.

It was learnt that State Chief fire Prevention Officer, Chukwuemaka Okezie led team who arrived at the institution hours after the fire was quenched were yet to make official the outcome of their report on what could possibly cause the fire outbreak.

 

Efforts to speak with the school’s principal, whose name was given as Mrs. Ogigina could not yield any positive effect at the time of this report.

Meanwhile, some parents including Mr. Samuel and Mrs. Okorie, residents of Umuahia and Old Umuahia respectively who spoke to our reporter outside the school gate said that they were in the school to ensure that their kids were safe after they learnt about the fire outbreak.

They expressed their sympathy over the incident and called on the school management to do all that they could to protect the lives of the students under their care. This is even as they feared that the damage could have been worse if the incident had occurred at midnight.
