The member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Alex Ifeanyi Mascot Ikwechegh has officially joined the Labour Party (LP).

Political analysts had speculated that the lawmaker may likely join Labour Party or Action Democratic Congress (ADC) who recently launched the new outlook of the party’s membership card in in Umuahia, which has some critical political stakeholders in Abia politics, including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe as registered members.

The defection of Ikwechegh to LP became a public discourse as his pictures with Gov. Alex Otti and the lawmaker representing Isiala Ngwa North and South federal constituency, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe surfaced on social media, holding LP party card, after they paid a private visit to Governor Otti in his Nvosi, Isiala Ngwa South country home Tuesday evening.
The lawmaker, popularly known as Onyeocha N’Aba, announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of the party, stating that his decision takes effect immediately.

In the brief letter, written on his official House of Representatives letterhead, Ikwechegh expressed appreciation to the party for the opportunity to serve and contribute during his time as a member.
“I respectfully submit my resignation from my membership of the party APGA effective immediately,” the letter read in part.
He further thanked the party for the platform given to him and wished it continued progress and success in its future endeavours.
While the letter did not disclose the reasons behind his resignation nor specify his next political move, many have opined that he could join Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe to the Action Democratic Party (ADC) or the Labour Party (LP) ahead of the 2027 general election where he might possibly seek re-election to the House of Representatives.
