Abia missing N27billion update:More trouble for Theodore Orji


The Economic Financial and Crime Commission (EFCC) on Monday gave an update on their investigation of immediate past Governor of Abia State governor, Chief Theodore Ahamefula Orji over the N27Billion allegation on how Orji laundered money meant for the development of the state.

EFCC in a statement revealed that they have arrested one Ogbonna Orji, aged 32 and Kelvin Ilonah in Abuja at the weekend by 5am after they went partying in an Abuja based Nite Club.

According to the anti-graft agency, while a Range Rover valued N100million was recovered from Orji, a Range Rover of about N35million was retrieved from Ilonah.

The statement signed by Tony Orilade, Ag Head, Media and Publicity of EFCC claimed that in the course of their investigation after the arrest of the duo who led them to their apartment of three flats, some documents that they were yet to reveal its contents were retrieved in the apartment which they were said to have been rented for N13m per annum.

The agency also disclosed that another brand new 2017 Prado Jeep belonging to the duo was recovered from their residence.

The two boys were said to have been giving the EFCC useful information that is helping their investigation.

“It is in the news that we have been investigating the former Abia governor, Senator Theodore Orji over alleged N27 Billion Naira money laundering. In the course of investigation, we discovered that he laundered part of the money through his sons. We have been on the trail of some of the purchases made by his son including the cars the boys allegedly bought.

“Last Friday, we traced one of the cars to a Nite Club in Abuja. In order not to cause panic, we waited until the business of the club was over and we when the owner of the suspected car came to enter to take off, we arrested him and his friend who has a similar brand of car. That was about 5am on Saturday, December 8, 2018.

“The two boys we arrested were Ogbonna Orji, 32, and Kelvin Ilonah. While Orji’s Car, a Range Rover is valued at about N100 million, Ilonah’s car also a Range Rover, is valued at about N35 Million.

“In the course of further interrogation, the two boys led us to their apartment, three flats, and documents retrieved from the apartment showed it was rented for N13 million each per annum.

“Another brand new Prado Jeep, a 2017 model was recovered from the boys in the compound. The two boys in question gave useful information to the Commission which is helping in our further investigation.

“The EFCC, as a responsible organization is abreast of the establishment mandate and we shall not deviate from such mandate…,” part of the statement read

Meanwhile, filers in the state has it that Orji’s associates including the commissioners under the incumbent Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu’s administration are allegedly making efforts to ensure that radio stations in the state do not air the news of the EFCC investigation on the former Governor and family.

Sources from the corridors of power in the state who pleaded not to be mentioned told our reporter that the news about the investigation on the former governor of Abia State who is seeking reelection for Abia Central District has been causing unrest among his camp.

There were indications at the weekend that more persons including politicians and some persons in the state who have been fingered in the fraud may be whisked by the anti-graft agency as soon as they have enough evidence to swoop on them.
