Football legend and Enyimba International FC Chairman, Nwankwo Kanu aka Papilo, was in Bende on Sunday, July 26, 2026, to join the convener of the competition, Dr. Chimaobi Desmond Anyaso, for the official kick-off of the maiden OFUJI Unity Cup 2026.
The opening ceremony was held at the Amaokwo Item Mini Stadium in Bende Local Government Area, drawing hundreds of residents, community leaders, and dignitaries from across the 13 wards of Bende Federal Constituency.
Sponsored by the Ofuji Foundation, the tournament is themed “One People. One Game. One Bende.” According to organizers, the competition is designed to foster unity, discover young football talents, and promote health and youth development in the constituency.
Dr. Anyaso, who appeared in a navy traditional outfit and the signature red “OFUJI” cap, performed the ceremonial kick-off and addressed the crowd. He emphasized that the initiative goes beyond football, noting that medical outreach and youth empowerment programs would run alongside the matches.
Kanu Nwankwo was warmly received at the VIP section where he sat alongside Dr. Anyaso. The former Super Eagles captain interacted with players, posed for selfies with fans, and commended the Ofuji Foundation for investing in grassroots sports.
Speaking at the event, Kanu said the tournament provides a platform for young players to showcase their skills, adding that exceptional talents may be considered for trials with Enyimba FC.
The tournament kicked off with *Ugwueke/Ezeukwu defeating Alayi 2-0*. Other participating teams include Landers Football United from Isobende, Boje, and Itumbauo, who featured in neon green kits.
The competition is scheduled to run through the year, with the grand finale set for December 2026 in Igbere. The winning team will take home a cash prize of ₦4,000,000.
