Breaking: Gunmen Reportedly Kill Two Policemen, Burnt Patrol Van, Cart Away Guns

There was apprehension in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State as unidentified gunmen on Tuesday evening reportedly killed two policemen.

The incident, our correspondent reports happened at the popular SAMECK junction linking road users and visitors to the popular shoe market, Old Express and Ariaria International Market respectively.

Our correspondent reports that the place where the policemen were killed was the same spot yet-to-be identified gunmen about four months ago, also attacked and killed four men in a commercial bus believed to be taskforce members of the government.

The gunmen similarly burnt the vehicle of the said taskforce officials, after killing them.

It was gathered that the police team who were reportedly providing escort to a state government official that was on a visit in the area were caught unawares as the said attackers also made away with guns belonging to the deceased policemen.

The said policemen were said to have died on the spot.

Sources in the area told our correspondent that the gunmen who apparently had been monitoring the team and decided to launch attack at the busy junction which also provided them the easy route of escape, taking advantage of the busy and rowdiness of the area

Sources who told our correspondent that the incident which happened at about 5pm when traders and customers were scampering to leave the Ariaria International Market, forced trades to abandon their wares on the road, to while some who had boarded vehicles and tricycles hopped out to scamper for safety.

The source claimed that some of the commercial bus and tricycle passengers that jumped out for safety are helpless as they could not see the driver carrying their goods.

The source said that the arrival of detachment of police team from the Aba Area Command and personnel of sister security agencies who shot sporadically upon arriving the scene added more fear on the people.

A source at the Ariaria International Market disclosed that both police, army and other security agencies took over the popular Faulks road, forcing traders and customers to take alternative route out of the market, following gun shots and shots of teargas canisters by the police team on Faulks road.
