Lawmakers of the Abia State House of Assembly on Wednesday elected Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa representing Aba State Constituency as the 8th Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly.

Also elected was the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Hon. Okezie Augustine Meregini of Umuahia East State Constituency.

They were both elected unopposed after being nominated by Hon. Akachukwu Uche, member representing Aba Central State Constituency and Emeka Obioma, member representing Umuahia South State Constituency.

Our correspondent who was at the State Assembly Complex reports that members-elect of the state Assembly started arriving the Assembly Chambers at about 3:15pm with few former lawmakers including a former Speaker of the Assembly, RT. Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka, Hon. Lukeman member that represented Arochukwu State Constituency in 2015 and the legislative aide to the governor of the state, Hon.Wisdom Ogbonna, Chibuzor Okogbue, Chijioke Nwachukwu, Hon. Humphrey Azubuike, Hon. Ndukwe Ojukwu and among others were present at the Assembly.

Speaking after being sworn-in, Emeruwa who said that he was grateful being elected the Speaker, promised to lead the House and discharge his duties as Speaker of the 8th Assembly with the fear of God, integrity and without fear of favour.

According to Emeruwa, the 8th Assembly under his watch would legislate laws for the wellbeing of the citizens of the state.

The new Speaker who stated that their election as members of the House was a call to serve promised that the lawmakers would not fail the trust the electorate reposed in them, adding that they were going to support the Dr. Alex Otti’s led executive to make the state governable and to achieve their dreams.

In his speech, the governor of the state, Dr. Otti reminded the lawmakers the huge expectations Abia electorate have on them, adding that they should not allow themselves to disappoint the people that elected them.

Otti who said that his “government is a government that will not have room for excuses, but action packed.”

He promised to partner with the House of Assembly to deliver democratic dividend to the people of the state, adding that they should not hesitate to reach out to him at any time that they would need his assistance.

Meanwhile, there was drama in the House as PDP members protested against the opportunity of nominating Deputy Speaker, an action that led to rowdiness of the Assembly as the Speaker overruled them.
