Manchester United have confirmed the loan signing of Wout Weghorst until the end of the season.

The Netherlands striker has joined the Red Devils from Championship side Burnley, but he will not be involved against rivals Manchester City on Saturday.

The 30-year-old had been at Turkish side Besiktas, but an agreement was reached for that loan spell to be ended early so he could head to Old Trafford.

The striker scored eight goals in 16 games in the Turkish Super Lig this season.

It was a marked improvement from his record at Burnley in the Premier League last season, after joining the Clarets in January 2022.

He managed just two goals in 20 matches for Burnley as they were relegated to the Championship.

That goal record in his brief Premier League stint was perhaps not a fair reflection on his overall career record.

At Wolfsburg, he netted 70 times in 144 games and then while at Dutch side AZ Alkmaar he hit 45 goals in 86 games.

Commenting on his switch, Weghorst. who was registered too late to the Citizens, has stated that he feels ‘privileged’ to join United.

He told the club’s website: “I feel privileged to be joining Manchester United.

“I’ve played against the club in the past and it’s a fantastic feeling to now have the chance to pull on the famous red shirt.

“I’ve seen United’s progress under Erik ten Hag this season and can’t wait to start playing my part in pushing the team towards its aims.

“Whatever happens in the next few months, I can promise to give everything to the club for as long as I am here.

“I thank everyone who has played a part in getting me to this stage, and now I am looking forward to meeting my new teammates and getting involved straight away.”

United director John Murtough added: “Wout has a consistent goalscoring record across several European leagues, and his attributes will add a further dimension to our squad for the remainder of the season.

“We were also attracted by his strong personality and dedicated approach to football, which fits perfectly with the spirit that Erik is building within our squad.

Weghorst’s signing will give Erik ten Hag more options in attack following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.

His contract was terminated following his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan where he hit out at Ten Hag and the club’s hierarchy.
