A melo-drama however, played out at the venue of the primary as a group of aspirants led by Paul Ikonne, Uche Ogah, former Minister of State for Mines, Obinna Oriaku, former Abia Commissioner for Finance and among others stormed the Umuagu, Umuahia North LGA venue of the exercise to protest the use of indirect method for the primary which they said was contrary to the decision of the national leadership of the party.
Ikonne, the Executive Secretary of National Agricultural Land Authority (NALDA) and his group staged a walkout from the venue of the party’s primary in anger.
Speaking after being declared the winner of the party’s primary, High Chief Emenike said “I am sure that from what played out, you must have noticed the huge challenge that we faced.
“This is not just an internal APC challenge, there are a lot of external forces who are interested in today’s primary. And some of these forces are responsible for the decay and misery that we have today in the state.
“Our mission is to rescue and liberate Abia State. I can assure you that nothing will deter us from delivering democratic dividend to the people of the state.
“I want to ask Abians not to go back and sleep. This is just the beginning of the beginning. It is the first journey in the step to liberate Abia State.
“I can’t do it alone and that is why I need to support and collaboration of all men of goodwill to be able to reach that destination.
“I can assure you that come May 29, 2023, we will have a bigger celebration.
“God Almighty has ordained that the time to liberate Abia State is now. Yes, there are crisis; there are internal wranglings.
“For those who are not sponsored to thwart our efforts, I can assure you that we will all work to develop Abia.
“I accept this mandate from our party with every sense of humility and responsibility, promising our party faithful that I will not let them down. We will ensure that we will liberate and make sure that development comes to the state.
“We must restore Abia as Gods Own State. The era of devil has gone, the era of occultism has gone, the era of underdevelopment had gone.
“We must prove that we can win elections. God will deliver Abia State.”
Dr. Kingsley Ononaogbu, Abia APC state chapter chairman, said it was a free and fair exercise.

On the staged protest by the other aspirants, Ononaogbu said the aspirants acted on ignorance, stressing that the National Executive Council (NEC) of the party approved indirect primary electoral process of choosing their candidates.
