Several persons on Wednesday escaped death by the whiskers as a truck conveying soft drink lost control and rammed into several commercial tricycles and cars in Aba, Abia State.
The incident occurred on the Ogbor Hill axis of the Ikot Ekpene Expressway, Aba North local government area of the state.
The driver of the truck and the conductor were said to have abandoned the truck and ran away as they thought many people could have died as a result of the accident.
Sources told our correspondent that several persons who were mainly passengers of commercial tricycles that sustained several injuries were rushed to the hospital to treatment.
According to an eyewitness, the truck conveying a popular soft drink was heading into the commercial town when the break failed while descending the Ogbor hill, hill near the popular Waterside Bridge.
It was gathered that the driver of the truck in an attempt to bring the truck to a halt, rammed into several cars and tricycles, taking advantage of the usual gridlock witnessed on the Ogbor hill bridge because of the deplorable nature of some parts of the bridge and the heavy traffic in Aba after the IPOB sit-at-home.
One of the survivors and the driver of one of the commercial tricycles affected in the accident who gave his name as Kingsley Godwin said “I was in front of Access bank waiting for the traffic to begin to flow when suddenly I heard a noise and it was the soft drink truck hitting my Keke.
“I had full load (of passengers). The truck dragged us to this point.
“I thank God that nothing happened to me. None of the passengers in my Keke died. But the injured ones, I learnt were rushed to the hospital for immediate medical attention.”
At the time of the visit of our correspondent, the incident resulted to heavy gridlock on the Waterside Bridge.
Some of the early callers to the scene re-echoed the call for a fly over or alternative route as they claimed that man lives have been lost on the bridge in accident several years as it has become common for articulate and other heavy trucks to lose control and ram into several cars while descending the Ogbor hill, hill.

It was learnt that police personnel from both Eziama and Azuka Police Division were present at the scene to ensure that some persons didn’t take advantage of the incident didn’t cause any breakdown of law and order in the area.
