One Dies As Rival Cults Clash In Enugu State

A young man in his late twenties, whose name is yet-to-be identified, has reportedly being killed in Enugu, Enugu State capital as two members of rival cults engage in shooting spree.

The incident which occurred around 1 pm on Thursday was said to have caused residents and traders along Agbani Road, close to Garriki Market, Awkunanaw to scamper for safety as bullets from the rival cult members rent the air.

The deceased was said to have been hit by a stray bullet in the mouth in the melee.

He was said to have been rushed to an undisclosed hospital by the police team that arrived the scene and met him in the pool of his blood.

“We heard gunshots and people started running in different directions. We thought unknown gunmen had come to the market. It was later we heard that it was a cult war. I did not go there, but I heard that the police came and took the injured young man away,” a source narrated.

While confirming the incident in a statement, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, described the attack as unfortunate.

He said, “Following a distress call received at Awkunanaw Police Division today, June 3, around 1pm, alleging that a young man was shot by suspected cultists, along Agbani Road, close to Garriki Market, Awkunanaw Enugu, police operatives swiftly moved to the scene, secured and rushed the victim to a nearby hospital, where he is responding treatment.
