Unknown Gunmen Attack Another Police Station in Abia, injuring a police officer

Unknown gunmen have reportedly attacked Ubani Police Station, name after the former IGP, Mike Okiro, located in Umuahia North Local Government Area, few distance away from the state capital. 


The citing of Ubani police station by the immediate past governor of Abia State, Sen. Theodore Ahamefule Orji was to provide security for traders at the Ubani Ibeku market and other suburbs.


Information gathered from sources has it that their was no life lost, but a police officer was reportedly injured while they were repelling the hoodlums in an incident that occurred about 9am on Sunday.


It was gathered that the hoodlums however, set ablaze exhibit cars parked in the premises of the police station.
The incident was said to have left road users of Umuahia-Uzuakoli-Ohafia road stranded throughout the period the exchange of fire power between the gunmen and the police lasted.

Attempts to release suspects in the police custody failed as the police was said to have in the heat of ongoing attack on police stations had evacuated suspects in the facility to other  police stations within the capital city, leaving behind the exhibits as some of them can’t be towed from the police facility. 


 Residents of the area, who confirmed the incident told our correspondent that they heard heavy gunshots within the area, only to behold the news on the attack of the police station in the morning.

At time of filing the report, residents of Umuahia said that the there is heavy presence of security agencies, especially the police, army and DSS on the streets of the capital city which they said is causing apprehension among the city dwellers. 


In a telephone interview, the Abia State Police Command PPRO, Geoffrey Ogbonna while confirming the incident said that the hoodlums came in one Hummer Bus, a Toyota Sienna and a motorcycle.


Ogbonna who debunked stories that the police station set ablaze by the hoodlums confirmed the injury sustained by a policeman, adding that no gun was stolen away from the police officers.

He also confirmed that the hoodlums entered the police station and burnt some of the documents they saw in those offices. 


He said two vehicles and two motorcycles within the premises of the station were burnt. 


On the presence of security personnel patrolling the state capital, the police spokesman said that it was to forestall any further attack as intelligence has it that the hoodlums after attacking the Ubani Police Station were heading to another location to carry out another nefarious.

He urged the people of the state to provide the police with further useful information that will lead to the arrest of the hoodlums.
