“Our camp is COVID-19 free”, says Abia NYSC Boss

The State Coordinator of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Lady Bona Fashakin on Wednesday in Umuahia, Abia State capital said that the state orientation camp at Umunnato in Bende Local Government Area of the state is COVID-19 free and safe for camping.

Fasakin while speaking to journalists over the growing concern on the safety of corps members that would be carrying out their camping exercise in the facility said that the management of NYSC in the state as part of its efforts to ensure the safety of the camp and corps members, have consistently subjected all corps members and NYSC staff to compulsory testing before they were allowed entry into the camp with all the COVID-19 protocols being observed inside the camp.

According to her, those who test positive at the entrance of the orientation camp gate were allowed to enter the camp, stating that there is a standby ambulance at the gate of the camp that conveys those that tested positive or suspected COVID-19 carrier(s) to Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center for “PCR” confirmation.

She said that the COVID-19 positive patients were monitored and treated and were only allowed to leave the facility after they were certified COVID-19 free in line with the protocols of COVID-19.

Giving a further breakdown, the State Information Commissioner, John Okiyi-Kalu who was also part of the Press briefing noted that all Corps members and visitors to the camp were subjected to COVID-19 test using the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kit, adding that out of the 6 positive RDT results who were immediately moved to Amachara, for confirmation tests.

Okiyi-Kalu added that 5 returned positive PCR results and were subsequently isolated and managed with 4 already discharged in line with NCDC protocols.

He however, added that one out of the six persons is still being managed at the isolation center.

According to the Information Commissioner, 1,181 RDT tests comprising 973 Corp members and 208 non Corp members were carried out with 6 Positive results and 5 PCR confirmed cases.

The Commissioner reiterated that the state government “is satisfied with the measures put in place by the management of NYSC in the state to prevent the spread of the disease in camp and is fully supporting the Corps with our epidemiology, surveillance and rapid response teams”.
