Security has been beefed up in Abia State ahead of Friday’s judgment in the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal case between the governor of the State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Dr. Alex Otti.
Otti had approached the Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia, the state capital, seeking the nullification of the poll results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) which declared Ikpeazu winner of the 2019 governorship poll in the state as he claimed that the poll was marred by irregularities among other electoral anomalies.
Information gathered by our reporter from security sources has it that both uniformed and plain clothed personnel of various security agencies have been deployed in some of the identified flashpoints in Umuahia and Aba and other parts of the state where there could likely witness some skirmish whichever way the judgment goes on Friday.
According to the sources who spoke anonymously, the deployment of the personnel 24hrs before the judgment is a proactive step by the Police and other sister agencies to ensure that the state was safe and secured for both inhabitants and visitors to the state carrying out their legitimate businesses and economic activities.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Okon Ene in a telephone interview said that it was important that police and other security agencies in the state ensure that there won’t be any breakdown of law and other by both PDP and APGA supporters no matter what the outcome of the judgment.
Ene while calling on parents and guardians to warn their kids against being used to disrupt peace in the state said “we are well prepared. I can assure you that the police is well prepared ahead of tomorrow. We have put in tight security in place to take care of both those that will celebrate and those that think that they can cause problem.

“We are well prepared not only in Umuahia, but in Aba and any other part of the state because the celebration and disenchantment will not only be in Umuahia. What we are saying is that whoever that may be aggrieved with the outcome of the judgment tomorrow should not resort to disrupting the public peace, but to further explore the legal process as provided for in the constitution.”
