JAMB Governing Board expresses concern over low turnout, extortion

The Chairman, Governing Board of Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Dr. Emmanuel Ndukwe has expressed concern over low turnout and extortion of candidates at registration centers in Abia State.

Dr. Ndukwe, who made the assertion in Aba and Umuahia today  while inspecting some designated Computer Based Test (CBT) centers, warned that the board would not extend its closing dateline of February, 2019.

He expressed concern over what he described as illegal collaboration with owners of some tutorial class center that extort candidates in the two major cities of Aba and Umuahia, stressing that the worrisome aspect of it is that, the owner of this CBT centers claimed ignorance of the extortions.

“We are monitoring the CBT centers if they are complying with JAMB directives or not, especially the price of registration, and also find out their challenges and ways in which we can also improve in service delivery”

“It’s very sad that  we have established,  cases of extortion of candidates, we took CBT centers  unaware, we will institute more investigations, and the owner of the centers claimed ignorance of what we found out, we get to know by conducting random sampling of candidates who were on ground at the registration centers”

“I want state categorically that the board will not give any extension after the expiration dateline. So, I am calling on all JAMB candidates, Direct Entry (DE), United Tertiary Matriculations Examination (UTME) and foreign students to come forward and register for the exam, we have started registration and its ongoing. 

The Board Chairman said he was worried about the poor turnout of candidates in Abia, lamenting that parents and guardians should know that this year, JAMB registration for all categories candidates was going on concurrently.

He urged owners of CBT centers in the state to maintain the tempo of adherence to JAMB rules and regulation, saying the board would not tolerate any unethical conduct on the part of the centers.

Also Speaking, the Abia State Coordinator of JAMB, Mr. Chidebe Achunine said JAMB in collaboration with Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)  got intelligence report and arrested two cyber cafe operators in Aba, pretending to be registering candidates and extorting money from them.
