Abia State police chief, Chris Ezike may be appearing before the Federal High Court, Umuahia, on January 21 for allegedly tarnishing the image of investigative journalist Don Norman Obinna.

Ezike had declared Obinna wanted over alleged cyberstalking and other offences but the police reportedly told Obinna’s lawyer, who said his client was ready to surrender himself to the authorities and prove his innocence, that the journalist had committed no crime.

According to a post by Therealnews.com on its website, Obinna, in response, sued the police commissioner for maligning his name. He would be demanding N50 million in damages.

“I am shocked that our police would declare an innocent man wanted while actual criminals loot Nigeria dry,” Obinna said.

The will be heard on January 21.

Before that time, the court warned the police against violating Obinna’s rights, and declared the arrest warrant issued against him null and void.

Obinna, according to the report, has been publishing state government figures which are themselves publicly available. But the Dr-Okezie-Ikpeazu-led Abia State Government would rather have the media not draw attention to its books and allegedly crooked ways.

The investigative journalist also recently authored “Raped & Enslaved: Abia’s Era of Kleptocracy”, a ground-breaking book detailing the scandalously corrupt and ridiculously inept tenures of Senator T. A. Orji who governed Abia State for eight years.
