The Nigerian Army Language Institute (NALI) Ovim in Isiukwuato Local Government Area of Abia State has graduated 48 officers of Basic French Course 7/2018.
Infonet9ja.com learnt that the programme has become important to enable Nigerian troop learn the language of neighbouring francophone countries in order to enhance communication amongst the troops especially with the federal government committed in ensuring that the war against terrorism is total.
The course 7/2018 graduands comprises of 25 Majors and 23 Captains.
In his welcome speech, the Commandant of NALI, Brigadier General Benjamin S. Ipinyomi praised the students for their hard work and discipline which they exhibited during the course duration.
Ipinyomi further stated that the students were given 18 weeks intensive training during the course on all aspects of the French language.
“During the course, the students also went for immersion at Lome, Togo and sat for International examination organized by French Government known as DELF A1 and A2 conducted by the Alliance Francaise Enugu.”
While thanking the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai for the support he has been giving to the Institute since he assumed office, however, assured that the students were well grounded in the French language and thanked the COAS Lt Gen Tukur Buratai for his continuous support and interest in NALI.
The Special Guest of Honour at the graduation programme, Brigadier General Abubakar Ibrahim who is also the Commander 14 Brigade, Nigerian Army Ohafia, in his remarks stated that the fact that Nigeria is surrounded by Francophone countries necessitated the training of thw officers and soldiers in French language proficiency because during international operations, Nigerian Army personnel and that of French speaking countries interact together and hence the need for the proficiency.
Abubakar further describing French is as an International Language that is widely recognized by the United Nations and the Nigerian Army made it mandatory for its personnel to be well grounded in the French language.
A former COAS, Lt. Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (Rtd) who incidentally hails from Ovim was honoured at the graduation, praised the incumbent COAS for his foresight and initiative for sustaining the noble idea of the Institute.
Ihejirika also commended the Commandant and his staff for a job well done.
The event also featured award presentation to some of the students who distinguished themselves during the course.
Capt A. O. Adebo emerged as the best graduating student on the course.
