BREAKING: Goods worth millions go into flame in Aba market inferno

One of the local and populous markets in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State located on Obohia road in Aba South Local Government Area; Nkwonkwa Market is currently on fire.

Information gathered by our reporter has it that men of the State Fire Service had arrived the scene at the time of filing this report battling to put out the fire that has consumed several shops in the market.

But some sources denied that, stating that they have been scooping water from one of the drainages within the area and have been fighting the fire through self help.

It was gathered that the fire started at about 9pm is still has defiled efforts to stop it from spreading to other parts of the market.

There is no official information about the cause of the fire, but according to sources within the area, the fire was caused by a food vendor who allegedly couldn’t put out her cooking firewood properly before closing for the day.

“It all started from the shop of a food seller who we suspected couldn’t quench her firewood well before going and her shop was close to a carpenter workshop, the fire come from her shop and then enter the carpenter shop from there it started circulating and engulf other shops around”, our source said.

Information gathered from the Abia State Police Force Command has it that the newly posted Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Chris Ezike is scheduled to pay visit to the market today (Sunday) among other senior officers to ascertain the through position of events.
