As part of its humanitarian services to the public, the Rotary Club of New Haven, Enugu, Enugu State has given scholarships and wheelchairs to two polio victims in the state.
President of the club, Miss Chinyere Ikwuakor, made the disclosure during her inaugural speech shortly after her installation as the President of the zone in Enugu.
Ikwuakor said that the victims, Chinasa Arnike and Ifebuchi Nwodo, 19 years old respectively had over time suffered neglect and parental care as a result of their condition.
She said that the duo would be trained from primary school to the tertiary level by the club.
“Chinasa Arnike has been experiencing rejection until we discovered her. She decided to live above her challenges by not going into begging,” she said.
She said that the club was motivated to award full scholarship to the victims because it discovered that they had passion for education. “We have adopted them.
Chinasa will start in primary one while Ifebuche will continue where she stopped in primary three when schools resume this September.
“God helping us, we shall take them up to tertiary level,” she said.
Ikwuakor said that the club had been at the vanguard of fighting polio since 1979, adding that a lot still needed to be done in eradicating the scourge.
The president said that the club would spend no fewer than N5 million in six thematic areas of the 2018 Rotary Year.
“In the 2018 Rotary Year, we shall also support five indigent rural women to have access to finance and start up micro businesses,” she said.
She said that the club had the desire to give back to society, adding that they would build on the successes of previous administrations.
“I accept the support and trust placed on me to serve. Our desire is to execute projects that would impact on humanity.”
Ikwuakor said that members of the club needed to take seriously the environmental issues around them with a view to seeing how they could help mitigate them.
Earlier, the immediate past president of the club, Mr. Charles Odili described the inauguration of Ikwuakor as an `exciting moment’. Odili said that the club had made great successes through their collective resolve, adding “the foundation of our club is built on love.
“Our humanitarian services reach far and wide, especially to those we do not know,” Odili said.
