Seven Nigerian students arrested in Benin over cyber crimes

Seven Nigerian students have reportedly been arrested in (Cotonou) Republic of Benin for allegedly being involved in Cyber crimes.

 

Initial reports that circulated the media reported that about 50 Nigerians were being wrongfully arrested and detained by Police Officers in the Republic of Benin over a yet-to-be ascertained crime.

 

But Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora on her twitter handle @abikedairi announced that the seven Nigerian student Cotonou prison have been released.

According to reports, Dabiri-Erewa assured that the Nigerian High Commission in the country would ensure that justice was done.

 

She said that the Beninoise police complained that some of the Nigerian students that were arrested were involved in cybercrimes.

 

She said, “However, seven of the arrested Nigerian students have been released following the Embassy’s intervention.

 

“A scheduled meeting with the prosecutor will hold tomorrow morning over the charges against them. After the meeting, the Embassy would be in a better position to give a detailed account of the case.

 

“So far, Ambassador Oguntunase Kayode, the Nigerian High Commissioner moved in promptly and will ensure the investigation is thorough. For now, we also appeal to the parents and their children to keep calm and work with us to get to the end of the matter.”
