Ogbonnaya Onu Poly Rector Vows To Stop Extortion Of Students

The Rector Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Abia State, Engr. Christopher Okoro, has vowed that his administration would not leave any stone unturned in ensuring that extortion of students of the institution became a thing of the past.

Okoro, speaking on Thursday, at the Polytechnic’s auditorium during the event to mark the 2026 Orientation exercise for its new students, warned that no form of extortion of students will be tolerated under his watch, stressing that students should not be subjected to multiple payment of fees.

He insisted that the institution in line with the policy of the state government has phased out cash payments in the state polytechnic with electronic mode of payments, noted that no society or institution thrive through extortion.

He also used the occasional to inform the students that the state governor, Dr. Alex Otti has approved the construction of 5000 capacity bed hostels for both male and female students respectively at the Osisioma permanent campus of the institution to solve both accommodation and transportation problems of the students.

Dr. Okoro also announced that the management plans a 24hrs power supply and internet service at the Osisioma campus of the polytechnic as part of measures to make teaching and learning more conducive for the staff and students.

The rector, while reminding the students of the need to acquire one or more skills while they are still in the school, noted that much emphasis are now placed on skills than certificate, as skills give one more opportunities to be either be gainfully employed or becoming employers of labour and wealth creation.

The rector who reminded the students of the importance of keeping friends that will them to discover their purpose in life, identify bad company as one of the greatest destroyers of destinies.

This is even as he warned them against cultism and indulging in substance abuse or any other act capable of jeopardizing their studies in the institution.

Earlier in an address, the Dean Student Affairs of the polytechnic, Dr. Chinyere Ezeh who described the student’s admission into the polytechnic as a journey that marks the beginning of their career, urged them to be disciplined and responsible students.
