Akwa Ibom Assembly Shuts Down Motion To Ban Dog Meat Consumption

0

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has rejected a motion seeking to stop the consumption and sale of dog meat in the state.

The motion, sponsored by the member representing Etinan State Constituency, Hon Uduak Ekpoufot, failed to advance after it received no seconder during plenary.

Hon Ekpoufot raised concerns about the inhumane slaughter of dogs, the unhygienic conditions observed in many processing points, and the serious public health dangers linked to the consumption of dog meat.

He noted that dogs are often killed through cruel methods such as strangulation, blunt force, or repeated blows, all of which cause significant suffering.

The lawmaker also warned that poorly processed dog meat can expose consumers to dangerous pathogens including rabies, salmonella, trichinella, and other harmful parasites.

He stressed that many countries have already banned the practice due to the health risks involved.

Despite his detailed argument, the motion did not progress because it failed to secure a seconder, which is a mandatory requirement under the rules of the House.

Without support from any other member, the motion collapsed and was formally rejected by the Speaker.

The development means Akwa Ibom State will maintain the status quo on dog meat consumption for now, despite the sponsor’s call for stronger public health safeguards and more humane treatment of animals.
