There is palpable fear in Abia State as a soldier of the Nigerian Army identified as David was allegedly killed in Ugwunagbo local government area of Abia State.
David, who was recruited into the Nigerian Army, is an indigene of Edda in Ebonyi State, but was raised and schooled in Aba before joining the Nigerian Army in 2020.
The deceased, a Lance Corporal, serving in Port Harcourt, Rivers State was deployed from the Northern Nigeria where he served for some years.
It was gathered that he had come to Aba to visit his parents after he was granted pass by the army authorities as he recovers from a successful appendicitis operation.
The deceased said to be in his late twenties or early thirties was said to have been killed in front of his mother in their family compound.
While sources from the 14 Brigade, Army Headquarters, Ohafia, confirmed that the deceased was not serving under the brigade, they however claimed that his killing was carried out by suspected members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
However, sources around popular Kentas axis of Ohanku road, disclose that reports have it that the deceased was killed by men dressed in black who came to their family house to execute such heinous act.
One of the sources who gave his name simply as Ugochukwu said “he is not a cultist. But some of his friends are. Stories were that, he always protect his friends whenever that they are in trouble.
“We have asked and some people close to him said that he just came back and being that he just had appendicitis operation, he was just trying to recover from the post surgery pain and healing process.
“Sunday before the incident, we all saw him in the field while we were playing football.
“He was not wearing army uniform when the guys came for him.
“We even learnt that the mother begged them to kill her and leave him, but they declined. We were told that the people told the mum that they didn’t come for her, that he is their target.
“She watched them like him. That was very traumatic. I don’t think that she will get over that anytime soon.
“From stories, it appeared that he has issues with some persons before he travelled and apparently when words came to them that he’s back, they now took him unawares.”
Another source in the area, who have his name as Chigozie said that why they suspect that the killing could be cult related was that the same group of people after reportedly killing the army personnel, also killed a known cultist around No. 100 Umunkama road, by Mkpumkpu Ebule, in the same Ugwunagbo local government area.
Chigozie also confirmed massive arrest by soldiers of 14 Brigade, Ohafia, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barracks, Army Headquarters carried a mass arrest in the area, with many young men who were arrested during the raid, still in detention at the time of filing the report.
A source at the 14 Brigade Army Headquarters who spoke anonymously, confirmed the death of the young army personnel, adding that the said military personnel was not serving under the brigade.
