FG Launches SEDC To Drive Socio-Economic Growth In Southeast

The Southeast Development Commission (SEDC) is pleased to announce the official inauguration of its Board, a significant milestone celebrated at a distinguished ceremony at Chelsea Hotel in Abuja. Officiated by the Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh, this event marks a transformative moment in Nigeria’s regional development narrative, paving the way for integrated growth in the South East region.

The Commission expresses its profound gratitude to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to national unity and progress. President Tinubu is the first Nigerian President to fulfill the promise of regional development through the establishment of this dedicated commission for the Southeast, a bold initiative that honors long-held aspirations and underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to equitable development across Nigeria.

The Commission also acknowledges the proactive support of the current National Assembly, under the leadership of the Chairman, National Assembly and President of the 10th Senate, H.E. Sen. Godswill Obot Akpabio, GCON, alongside the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, GCON. Their swift legislative action in passing the bill to establish the SEDC demonstrates a resolute commitment to national development. Special thanks are extended to Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on SEDC, and Hon. Chris Nwocha, who have both encouraged the Commission to utilize its resources judiciously, assuring that the National Assembly will maintain vigilant oversight.

In his keynote address, Hon. Minister Engr. Abubakar Momoh emphasized that the SEDC is tasked with driving socio-economic growth in the South East by leveraging the region’s unique strengths and addressing critical development challenges. “This Board embodies the expertise and vision necessary to propel this mission forward,” he stated, while also calling on international agencies, development partners, and donor organizations to collaborate with the Commission to achieve its objectives.

Okoye II Executive Director, Corporate Services: Barr. Sylvester Okonkwo, FCAI Executive Director, Finance: Hon. Stanley Ohajuruka Executive Director, Projects: Hon. Toby Okechukwu Executive Director, Commercial and Industrial Development: Anthony Agbo Executive Director, Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Rural Development:** Dr. Clifford Ogbede

In addition to the executive management team, the SEDC Board includes esteemed members from diverse professional and regional backgrounds, whose expertise will be instrumental in shaping the Commission’s policies and projects.

“This distinguished group comprises Barr. Ugochukwu H. Agballah, Hon. Okey Ezenwa, Chief Hyacinth Ikpor, Barr. Ifeanyi Agwu, Hon. Nasiru Usman, Hon. Hamma Adama Ali Kumo, H.E. Edward David Onoja, Hon. Orure Kufre Inima, and Chief (Mrs.) Joke Adebayo-Chukwuma. Together, their collective experience and dedication will be pivotal in ensuring that the SEDC fulfills its mandate of fostering integrated and sustainable development throughout the South East.

In his remarks, Chairman Dr. Emeka Wogu underscored the importance of unity and strategic planning within the Commission’s activities.

He urged collaboration among all stakeholders to position the SEDC as a beacon of hope and progress for the South East region.

“Our region stands at the threshold of unprecedented transformation, and it is our collective duty to guide this Commission toward sustainable development and inclusive growth,” he affirmed.

Mr. Mark C. Okoye II, MD/CEO of SEDC, acknowledged the historic significance of the Commission’s establishment, noting that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has achieved a milestone in regional development that has eluded previous leaders in Nigeria’s democratic history.

He pledged a future of innovation and accountability for the SEDC, stating, “As custodians of this Commission, our role is central to realizing the Renewed Hope vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

“We must embrace sustainable practices and focus on the larger vision. Together, we will support the Governors in creating a South East that thrives on opportunity, innovation, equity, and progress.”

In a separate interview following the event, Barr. Sylvester Okonkwo, FCAI, Executive Director of Corporate Services, SEDC, extended heartfelt congratulations to the Chairman, all Board members, and the Executive Management Team led by Mr. Mark Okoye II.

He emphasized the Commission’s unwavering commitment to adhering to the regulations set forth in its founding Act and the importance of fostering innovative practices to expedite the achievement of its mandate. “The SEDC is not merely an institution; it is a transformative platform for realizing the aspirations of millions of South Easterners, both in Nigeria and globally. Achieving this vision will require collaborative teamwork within the Board and across all levels of SEDC administration.

“The Commission is dedicated to harnessing the ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit of the people of the South East to foster sustainable growth and prosperity.”

As the Commission embarks on its operations, it calls on all stakeholders within the region—including youth, women, persons with disabilities, religious leaders, private sector practitioners, and the South East diaspora—to collaborate in realizing a shared vision of prosperity, unity, and growth.

Indeed, a new era has begun for the South East and for regional development in Nigeria.
