Abia Poly Acting Rector Lauds Otti For Appointing Women Into Strategic Positions

The Acting Rector of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, Engr. Mrs. Chidinma Ndukwe has commended the governor of the state, Dr. Alex Otti for appointing women to serve in different strategic positions in his administration.

Engr. Mrs. Ndukwe, who led Women In Technical Education Development (WITED), Abia State Polytechnic chapter on a Road Show to mark 2024 International Women’s Day celebration, used the opportunity of the event to call for more opportunities to be given to women, noting that women who have been given the opportunity to serve in both public and private sector of the Nigeria’s economy were able to distinguished themselves.

Engr. Mrs. Ndukwe who broke the jinx of becoming the first acting female rector of the state owned polytechnic, lamented the increasing abuse the girl-child suffers in the hands of the people who were supposed to protect her.

This even as she further called for more attention to be given to the training of the girl-child by the government, parents and guardians, which she noted would ultimately rub off positively on the society.

“We want to say that the position that we place our women is very important. It has come to a time where women should occupy important positions in government and the society at large.

“We want to thank our amiable governor, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti OFR, the Executive governor of Abia State because he has already keyed into the “Inspired Inclusion” by appointing the first acting female rector in Abia State Polytechnic.

“We want to say that, women given opportunity in different carders of life affects the society positively. When you train a woman, you have trained a nation.

“Women like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala that have made impacts through the position that they have occupied and still occupying.

“We want to encourage our government to give women a chance. We are happy to God who has made us women.”

On what WITED had been doing to protect the girl-child from reported dehumanization and among other forms of abuse, the acting rector said “We have been championing the girl-child education. We organize seminars, scholarships to indigent students and among others.

“The society has not its best in protecting the girl-child. A lot of girl-child have suffered rape and all kinds of slavery.

“The increasing abuse or dehumanization of the girl-child in the hands of their madams and bosses is alarming and must be stopped. They have no right to maltreat another person’s child.

“They should rather see it as a privilege to have such children in their homes. Every child has a right to be trained and it might a blessing tomorrow.”

Also speaking, the coordinator of WITED, Abia State Polytechnic chapter, Dr. Mrs. Akuagwu Nneka Agbayim, while thanking the governor of the state for appointing Engr. Mrs. Ndukwe first female acting rector, also thanked rector for reviving the Abia Poly WITED chapter upon assumption of office.

Dr. Agbayim who corroborated the rector noted that women should be inspired or empowered to achieve her full potentials.

Listing cultural, political and among other barriers as factors that limit women from achieving their goals, the WITED coordinator also disclosed that the group frowns at the spate of indecent dressing among women, especially the young ones, which she noted makes them more vulnerable.

The rally had the presence of other top female staff of the polytechnic including the Dean Students Affairs, Dr. Ann Ikechi, the HOD Mass Communication Department, Mrs. Chinyere Eze, Mrs. Stella Nwakanma and among others.
