Yet-to-be known gunmen have reportedly killed and beheaded an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) serving under the Abia State Command of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF)
The ASP identified simply as “Agbalagba” is said to be attached to the Ndiegoro Police Division in Aba South local government area of Abia State.
Our correspondent gathered that the gunmen after killing and beheading the late police officer, made away with his gun and police uniform.
The ASP, an indigene of Ebonyi State, who led the patrol team was said to be due for retirement by September this year.
Late Agbalagba and his team were said to be on early morning stop and search operation on Tuesday at Cameroon road by East when the gunmen swooped on them unawares.
Information has it that preliminary outcome of an investigation by the police on the incident, points fingers to a notorious gang in Aba whose gang leader leader popularly known as JT was killed by team of police officers in a gunmen duel on Sunday, April 23 in Aba while he was trying to escape through the popular Aba River.
Our correspondent reports that residents and business owners along East Street, Ngwa Road, Akpu Road, Ndoki Street, Etche Road, and Ulasi Road could not open for business for fear of being arrested by the police.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abia State Command (PPRO) Geoffrey Ogbonna could not pick several calls placed on his mobile phone nor respond to thr text message sent to his mobile phone.
However, a source at the State Command confirmed the incident, adding that investigation into the matter has commenced.
The source said that the late ASP was one of the police officers that were recently transferred to the Ndiegoro Police Division from Isuikwuato Police Division, adding that it was the second “missionary journey” of the late police officer to Ndiegoro Division.
Another source disclosed that the Commissioner of Police in the state has ordered for the immediate arrest and detention of his colleagues who were said to have ran for safety when the team was attacked, instead of putting up attempts to repel the gang or stop them from getting to the point of beheading their team leader.
Our correspondent recall that some fee months back, some gunmen operating in a tricycle attacked and made away with an AK-47 of one of the policemen on stop and search operation at Osusu by Faulks road.
Some residents of Aba after the incident at East have questioned the level of mental alertness of police officers who were engaged in road work.
