There’s high anxiety in the camps of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) respectively as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) concludes collation of the 2023 governorship election in Abia State today.
Okey Ahiwe of the PDP and Alex Otti of the LP are the major contending political parties in the 2023 governorship race.
Infonet9ja.com reports that INEC on Sunday before adjourning collation of results to 9am Monday (today) by the State Returning Officer, Prof. Nnenna Otti, the Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Technology (FUTO), Owerri, Imo State had assured that the will of the Abia electorate must prevail, this is even as she promised to discharge her duties with fairness.
Recall that infonet9ja.com had reported that the INEC had received results of 10 local government areas; Isiala Ngwa North, Isiala Ngwa South, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East, Ukwa West, Ikwuano, Bende, Umunneochi, Arochukwu and Isuikwuato with the LP in clear lead.
Our correspondent reports that Festus Okoye, the National Electoral Commissioner in-charge of Abia State had in a press conference Sunday night alleged that its personnel were held hostage by hoodlums in their Obingwa LGA office.
But information has it that the personnel were rescued and ferried to the headquarters of INEC about 8pm on Sunday.
While INEC through Barr. Festus Okoye said that the Commission would soon take a stand on Obingwa Incident, it was gathered that the LGA result if accepted by INEC may drastically reduce the lead gap of the LP.
Information from the LP camp has it that out of the 7 remaining local government areas, the party is leading in 4; Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Aba North, Aba South with a wide margin that will cancel whatever that will come from Obingwa.
There are fears also that INEC may cancel the entire Obingwa result as a result of the security report in the LGA on Sunday.
