The governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has announced the promotion of all the staff of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba.
Ikpeazu who announced the cheering news at the institution’s pavilion during a town hall meeting with workers of the polytechnic on Wednesday said that the promotion was across board.
Abia State governor who called on the management and staff to put heads together and see how they could improve the quality of teaching in the institution said “The workers should give the rector the desired cooperation and the rector should engage transparently. Make this town hall meeting the highest decision-making body.
“Previous Council failed because they have not sufficiently protected the staff and students.
“The leadership of the union must open themselves to all kinds of discussions and conversations. As academics, time has gone when you will sit back and criticise like a very wonderful spectator in a football match that doesn’t know how to kick the ball. This is the time that as you are criticizing, you are proffering solution.
“There is no governor that will come here with his own money or become a magician.
“A lot of us thought of all manner of things that we would have loved to do, but when you arrived here, you will see that the journey of leadership isn’t a straight line. It requires that you have the requisite comportment and temperament to listen to even gibberish that people will write and tell about you.
“I pray that this Polytechnic will rise from despondency and seize their destinies in their hands.
“We must grow our student population. We must grow our student population. We must set a target for drafting ourselves. We must draft and design courses that represent the yearnings of our immediate community by setting up courses that relates to garments, leather works and everything that we do in this space.
“We must find a space to protect the students that we have and also make sure that they graduate on time. Because if we continue to demarket our school, people will look for other options to send their children. When you demarket the school, you are also demarketing yourself.
“This Polytechnic can become strong and viable if we must determine how much that we get and manage it properly.”
The acting Rector, Associate Professor Haglar Okorie promised the support of the staff and students to the governor and the governorship candidate of the party.
According to Okorie, he was overwhelmed with the quality of staff the polytechnic parades, adding that the number of Doctorate Degree holders in the school is second to none among polytechnics in the southeast.
The PDP governorship candidate of the PDP in his speech said that he has good understanding of what the problem of the school is and promised to ensure that whatever that the incumbent governor didn’t do, that he was going to address them as soon as he was sworn in as the governor of the state.
