Manchester United came from 1-0 down to stun their Manchester rivals; Manchester City at Old Trafford on Saturday English Premier League encounter.
Jack Grealish came off the bench to score the opening goal of the game for City midway through the second half, but United levelled the scores thanks to a controversial Bruno Fernandes goal in the 78th minute.
Marcus Rashford then netted the winning goal moments later with a close-range finish from Alejandro Garnacho’s cross.
The result means United climb to third in the Premier League table and now sit just one point behind second-placed City, who are at risk of falling further behind league-leaders Arsenal.
Four points separated fourth-placed United and second-placed City at the start of the afternoon.
Few would have predicted that back in October, when City hammered United 6-3 at the Etihad Stadium thanks to hat-tricks from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden. Both players were named in Pep Guardiola’s starting XI on Saturday lunchtime.
United have gone into most recent Manchester derbies as firm underdogs due to the gulf in class between the two clubs.
But Erik ten Hag is slowly turning around the club’s fortunes and his team went into Saturday’s fixture on the back of six consecutive victories in all competitions.
What happened in the first half?
It was Man Utd who were presented with the first chance of the game in the 10th minute. Fernandes fired narrowly wide of Ederson’s far post from an acute angle.
City’s top scorer Haaland endured a frustrating first half, touching the ball just twice inside the opening 20 minutes.
His first sight of goal in the 23rd minute was charged down by Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who continues to enhance his status as a fan favourite with each passing match.
The in-form Rashford went close on two occasions before half-time but the deadlock remained unbroken at the interval.
Rashford sustained an injury shortly before the break but was surprisingly deemed fit enough to start the second half. However, Anthony Martial was subbed off for Antony.
Guardiola subbed off the ineffective Foden for Grealish in the 57th minute, and it was the English substitute who put City 1-0 up moments later, heading home Kevin De Bruyne’s cross.
Man Utd produce sensational comeback
However, Fernandes put United back on level terms with just over 10 minutes left on the clock.
The goal was initially ruled out for offside but it was deemed that Rashford did not touch the ball as it rolled through to Fernandes.
