A couple identified as Mr. Emmanuel Onyenweaku Nwankpa and Mrs. Happiness Emmanuel Onyenweaku Nwankpa from Umuokpulor Abayi in Osisioma local government area of Abia State have reportedly conspired to kill their stepson whose name was given as David Chiemena Onyenweaku.
This is even as the Abia State Police Command has launched manhunt on the youths that paraded the couple naked in the village and on the Osisioma axis of the ever-busy Aba-Owerri road.
Our correspondent gathered that the couple have been banished from the community after being paraded Publicly naked by irate youths of the community.
The body of the 25-year-old has been deposited in a nearby morgue to the community along the busy Aba-Owerri road.
It was gathered that the couple buried the deceased stepson in their compound in a shallow grave without the knowledge of any member of the family.
Our correspondent who visited the family compound reports that the compound reports that the place was deserted as people flee to avoid possible arrest by the World Bank Police Division, under whose jurisdiction the incident happened.
Household items of the couple destroyed by the angry youths were seen littering in some of the rooms at the time of filing the report.
Some of the neighbours of the Onyenweaku family, including the traditional ruler of the community, His Royal Highness Eze Ugonna refused speaking on the matter.
However, some members of the community who spoke to our correspondent said that the couple were banished from the community for allegedly killing the deceased over a landed property.
“An account has it that the couple killed their stepson and buried him in a shallow grave and kept it secret until a friend of the deceased son who claimed that the son came to the dream to narrate how he was reportedly killed by his father and stepmother.
“The couple denied it, but when the said friend claimed that the deceased disclosed that he was buried in the compound, the irate youths of the community who were also curious on the sudden disappearance of the deceased were said to have ransacked the house in search of the deceased corpse.
“They also threatened to burn down the house if the couple fails to provide answers to the whereabouts of their son. It was in the heat of the commotion that the couple opened up and took the youths to a part of the compound where they exhumed the body of the deceased from a shallow grave.
“Seeing how the deceased was buried, the went berserk, inflicting several bodily injury and later paraded them round the community.
“They were forced to take the body of the deceased to the morgue,” said a community source.
Another source who could not attribute the death of the deceased to the said property crisis claimed that the deceased was brought back home sick by a woman that was taking care of him.
The source disclosed that the couple were banished from the village from the community hall by the youths.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Abia State Command, Geoffrey Ogbonna in a telephone interview said “There was no formal report of the incident to the police. Nobody has gone to the police to report in order to give the police a true account of what happened.”
The Police PPRO added that the World Bank Divisional Police Officer and other concerned sectional heads are putting heads together to ensure that they locate and speak with couple and the youths that paraded them naked as part of their efforts to carry out proper investigation to unravel the cause of the death of Chiemena.
