No Fewer Than Six Persons Reported Dead In Abia Gas Explosion

Markets and motor parks in the state will be closed for two hours on Friday (tomorrow), August 26 between the hours of 7am-9am.

A statement issued by the Commissioner for Environment, Barr. Sam Nwogu has it that the closure of the market was to enable the traders and motor park managers and users to clean their business premises ahead of the state’s monthly sanitation exercise on Saturday, August 27th.

Barr. Nwogu in the statement issued to journalists, also directed that residents should stay at home, clean up their areas and work with their nose mask during the sanitation exercise on Saturday which will run between the hours of 9 am and 11am.

The statement also stipulated that movement of people and vehicles during the period would be restricted except those on essential duties who would be required to present on demand, valid identification or any authentic authorization for such exemption.

The release enjoined the Executive Chairmen of the Local Government Councils, Traditional Rulers, Town Union Leaders, Religious Leaders, Youth and Women Organizations in the state to monitor and sensitize their people on the importance of the exercise and to participate as well.

“The Nigeria police, Federal Road safety Corps, the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, are to assemble at their usual places of take off for deployment”, the release read in part.

The release also reminded residents that defaulters would be arrested and prosecuted in line with the Abia State Basic Environmental Law.
