The Chief Whip of the Nigerian Senate and former Governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu has tasked governors of the five Southeastern states to address the growing insecurity in the region.
Sen. Kalu in a statement on Sunday also called on heads of various security agencies in the zone to ensure that they rise to the ocassion of nipping insecurity in the region in the bud.
The Nation reports that the rate of kidnapping, banditry, armed robbery, cultism and deaths associated to insecurity in the region have become source of concern to the people of the zone.
Recall that the Prelate of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Kalu Uche who was abducted within the Isuochi, Umunneochi Local Government Area of Abia State, reportedly parted with the sum of N100m before he could regain his freedom.
According to the Senate Chief Whip, the data on security incidents in Abia State and Nigeria at large reflects the “real agony of our citizens and communities, their pains and losses, and the fears and anxiety that have created considerable distress.
“I am deeply concerned about the impact of the state of insecurity on citizens’ safety, means of livelihood and the exercise of the rights of Abians, Nigerians, particularly the right to life, right to movement, and ultimately the country’s socio-economic development.
“On my part, I have met with heads of security agencies to discuss the state of insecurity in our state and region. Few days ago, I also met with the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria to discuss security issues with him, which he promised to assist us with.
“During my tenure as the Governor of Abia State, Security of lives and properties was one of my priorities and I was able to deal with the issue of insecurity using every instrument available to me.
