A 21-year-old member of an armed robbery gang operating in a commercial tricycle identified as Mr. Darlignton Ude has been confirmed dead in a private hospital in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State.
Ude, an indigene of Isuochi local government area of the state died shortly after he was admitted for treatment of a gun injury he sustained from the gunshots of soldiers of 144 Battalion stationed at the Emelogu junction military outpost as he and other members of his gang were trying to escape through the popular Orji Uzor Kalu Bridge in Aba South LGA.
Late Ude and his gang, according to reports, have in the past weeks snatched and dispossessed a lot of innocent residents of the area of their valuables including cash and among others.
Efforts by soldiers at the Emelogu junction to track and arrest the gang have been unsuccessful over the weeks.
It was gathered that the group Monday night came back in the same area where they dispossessed people of their valuables.
It was gathered that the soldiers at Emelogu junction, acting on intelligence stormed the area and the gang upon sighting the soldiers, took to their heels as they dashed into the bushes around the Orji Kalu Bridge, abandoning the tricycle (keke) that they were operating with.
The soldiers were said to have fired shots at them which hit Ude.
Ude was so badly injured that he could no longer run and was later picked up by the soldiers who were combing the bush.
Ude was said to have been taken to a private hospital where he was to receive medical attention to save his life and to possibly hand him over to police for prosecution.
Other members of his gang are still being trailed by the 144 Battalion intelligence team.
