There was pandemonium in Amangwu community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State as soldiers from 14 Brigade Headquarters, Ohafia reportedly stormed the agrarian community on Tuesday.
Reports have it that the soldiers who came in various patrol vans besieged the community in the early hours of Tuesday to the surprise of the community.
The situation was said to have forced the community members to alert their relations outside the community to avoid their village for the time being until the mission of the soldiers were ascertained.
A source in the community that preferred anonymity told our correspondent that the soldiers who came to the village unannounced created fear among the villagers who were preparing to return to their farms after the Monday.
“We are yet to get over the trauma of the last time soldiers invaded our community, sometime in June. So, when we saw them, a lot of people who were coming back to the village were asked not to come in, while those that went to the farm had to take refuge in other neighbouring communities.
“Last night, we couldn’t sleep well because we heard the sound of what seems to be jet fighter around the village. But we told ourselves that it could be soldiers who are carrying out the ongoing military exercise going on in the southeast or maybe, that the jet fighter was just passing. But in the morning, our fears was confirmed. I will not tell you what the situation or tension was like. The village was enveloped with fears because there was no per-information of any military exercise in our village.”
But when contacted, the Army public Relations Officer (APRO) Omale Prince confirmed the presence of soldiers of the 14 Brigade at Amangwu community.
The 14 Brigade spokesman who debunked killing and burning of houses in the village as were alleged by some villagers stated that the reason of the military presence was in response to an intelligence that some persons were stockpiling arms in the community.
