A former Director Operations of the Department of State Services (DSS), Chief Raymond Nkemdirim has urged political parties in Nigeria to zone their presidential ticket to the southeast.

Nkemdirim in an interview at the weekend warned that the use of brute force alone will not end the separatists’ agitations going on in the Southeast geopolitical zone.

He called on the federal government to take corrective actions politically to douse the tension in the southeast.

The former DSS Director of Operations posited that the agitations in the southeast was caused by a number of factors, including marginalization of the people of the zone.

He insisted that until these milrad of issues were addressed and every region of the country given a sense of belonging, the use of force instead of dialogue would rather escalate than quell the crisis in the southeast region.

He said there was a mindset of marginalization which shooting alone cannot address, adding that wrong political actions in the past have heightened the call for a separate nation; Biafra.

Nkemdirim particularly mentioned the issue of political appointments that did not represent true Federal Character as one of the factors that should be addressed.

He said out of the three regions of the country, it was only the South East that does not have a representation at the security circle of the current government which he said creates a sense of alienation.

He also expressed concern that there has not been equity in the power balancing among the regions.
According to the security expert, while other regions of the country had at one time or the other produced the President, Southeast has not done so.
