The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has revealed why Enyimba International Football Club of Aba failed to win the just concluded 2020/2021 Nigeria’s Domestic Football League (NPFL).
Gov. Ikpeazu in a recent interview he granted to journalists while congratulating the two state teams for playing their best in the just concluded league, however blamed Enyimba for failing to win more home matches. This is even as he maintained that the three unfortunate slips of the club at home not good for them.
Gov. Ikpeazu who maintained that Enyimba could have wrapped up their position (to emerge the league leaders) long before the end of the season, said that Enyimba concentrated more on winning away matches, maintained that had Enyimba won their home matches, they could have apparently ended the season as league favorites.
Ikpeazu who was worried on the poor goal scoring record of Enyimba International Football Club in the just concluded season said “I congratulate Enyimba and Abia Warriors for the wonderful feat. When I go to talk to them privately, I will tell them they could have wrapped up their position long before now. Three unfortunate slips at home not good for Enyimba.
“We were busy concentrating on winning our matches away, I think Enyimba ended up with the best away record in the league this time, which is good but such record is important, relative to the log, if you win your home matches as well.
“If we had won all our home matches, that would have been a great success. The third thing I would love to add is, we need to score more goals.
“When the chips are down and you have two three teams contending same position, at the top, goal differences begin to count. We have to go back to our scoring ways so that we can have two, three, four players contending for the highest goal scorer from the team in the national league. Having said that, I am proud of their performance in the league, it could have been worse.
“I want to encourage them by saying that with their pedigree as champions, they should know that they have to work hard to remain on top because people are taking aim and firing at them from every angle.

“Every club in Nigeria wants to beat Enyimba; it’s a thing of pride. In fact, some clubs will prefer to beat Enyimba and be relegated. It’s not a mean feat to be a champion; they should up their game and remain on top there.”
