The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO of Abia command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna at the time of filing the report was yet to respond to a text message sent to his mobile phone.
But a source who pleaded not to be mentioned told our correspondent that the attackers used dynamites and rocket launchers to suppress the efforts of the policemen on duty who had resisted their attempt to attack the police station.
The attackers who were said to have stormed the station a few minutes before 3am met stiff resistance from policemen on duty, but later had their way after using superior weapons to out run the efforts of the police officers on ground.
The number of lives affected in the melee could not be immediately ascertained, but among items torched by the arsonists include the police building, vehicles in the police facility, exhibits (especially cars) and police patrol vans, including motorcycles and tricycles.
Unconfirmed reports have it that two persons accused of assault, occasioning harm were released by the attackers.
A police source who disclosed that investigation into the matter has commenced claimed that no life was lost, adding that no firearm was carted away by the arsonists.
