The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced that the state was going to take stringent actions against drivers of heavy duty vehicles that flout government’s ban on movement of goods and petroleum products in the state in the day time.
Recall that following persistent deaths, damage to properties and untold hardship suffered on Lagos roads by roads users caused by the activities of drivers of intra and inter-city heavy trucks, the State government had banned truck drivers from operating in the day time, but this hasn’t been fully adhered to as they have continued to flout the governor’s directives.
Gov. Sanwo-Olu who paid condolence visits to families of Chidinma Ajoku aged 27 and Chima Nnaekpe, aged 29 that lost their children to a fallen container while on their way home from work at Ilasamaja, Lagos State said “losing a loved one is extremely painful, but what is more painful is losing them prematurely.”
According to Sanwo-Olu, their deaths are totally avoidable, and “we take responsibility for this sad incident.
“The onus is now on us to enforce stricter and more stringent laws in order to put a total stop to these unfortunate incidents.
“The heat of the sun will not be an excuse for the hot temper and impatience of trailer drivers, container drivers and truck drivers on our roads.
“We will deploy security forces as cooling aids.
“It is indeed very sad that these young, innocent and hardworking people died in their prime due to no fault of theirs.
“I deeply sympathize with the families, and I pray that God grants them strength during this difficult period.
“The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo SAN represented me and the entire Lagos state government on a condolence visit to the Ajoku and Nnaekpe families, and relayed my message to them.
“We will ensure the departed and their families get the justice they deserve.
“I have also charged the Commissioner of Police to ensure a thorough investigation, and instructed the Attorney General to lead the prosecution of this case before the court and ensure that justice is served appropriately and swiftly.”
