A man whose name is yet-to-be ascertained is reportedly cooling off his heels in the custody of the Nigeria Police Force, Abayi Divisional Headquarters after he was rescued from being lynched by a mob at Afor-Ule market, off Aba-Owerri road, Aba, Abia State.

The inability of the suspect to explain death of the baby and the deceased mother’s whereabouts was said to have prompted the mob to attempt lynching the suspect.

It was gathered that the police team on patrol were alerted by the number of people gathered and surging towards the market.

On getting close to the scene, they noticed that some members of the crowd were bearing several dangerous weapons which were already being hauled at the suspect.

The police team was said to have quickly intervened and moved him (suspect) out of the scene to the Abayi Police Station.

When our reporter visited the scene, sources around Afor-Ule Market told our reporter that the young man in his early thirties, who pretends to be mentally deranged, is a regular face in the area.

They said that while they assume that the suspect could have been suffering from self inflicted predicament, seeing the suspect being caught with the body of a dead baby has made them to think that it could be a camouflage.

According to a source in the area, “my brother, with is happening in our society, you can hardly swear for even your children.

“The incident this morning has made us to doubt the true state of his mental derangement. The question that we want the police to help us ask him (suspect) is, where he got the baby and where he is taking the baby to?

“From all indication, the baby didn’t appear to have been abandoned in a dustbin or on the road. The wrapper covering the baby is dry. The baby’s cloth and cap are all dry and fresh, showing that wherever that he might have picked the baby, it was done today’s morning.

“Could it be that he picked the baby from a compound and suffocate the baby on the way? Could it be that he is working for a cartel that is dealing in human parts? Could it be that someone wanted to use him to move the baby to a particular location?

“We want to know where he is taking the child to. We have had instances where some people disguise to be mad, while they were only pretending and using same to divert attention from the public.”

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Janet Agbede when contacted, told our reporter that she will reach him back, which she never did at the time of filing the report.

A source in the Abia Police Command who however, pleaded anonymity confirmed the incident, but decried the attempted jungle justice.

According to the source, the suspect is placed under close monitoring by the Police at Abayi Police Station, stating that efforts to get information about the baby and the mother from the suspect have proved abortive as he (suspect) has continued to act strangely.

“Since he has been at the Abayi Police station, our men have tried all that they could to see if they can get something meaningful from him (suspect), but he has been incoherent with his statements.

“He has been placed under close watch to see if he was just acting up or that he is truly mentally deranged,” added the source.
