Multiple auto accidents claim lives of three persons

Three persons have reportedly lost their lives in a multiple road accidents that occurred in Abia State over the weekend.

While one of the accidents happened along Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway near popular Cherubim bus stop, while the other one occurred in front of the Owerrenta Naval School of Logistics Base along Owerri-Aba Expressway.

Investigation by our reporter has it that the cause of the accident on Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway involving a Honda Accord with reg No.  Lagos State TJ 728 KJA and a Ladies Machines; Red Mate 80 was over-speeding while the Owerrenta crash involving three vehicles with Reg No. XA 660 JJT, KSF 673 XN, and GGE 822 XV was as a result of brake failure.

Sources at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Command Headquarters Umuahia, the state capital told our reporter that the corpses of the three persons who lost their lives in the multiple accidents were deposited at Mighty Moon Mortuary.

Among those that died in the Owerrenta accident were the driver of a Mack truck and his conductor who died on the spot.

Those that sustained serious injuries were said to be receiving at a private hospital; Ronald Hospital, Umuikaa in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.

One of the eyewitnesses, Mr. Stanley Onukwubiri while narrating the Owerrenta incident said “I was on a bike going somewhere after the Owerrenta Naval Base when the truck driver and his conductor were flagging and signaling people.

“We didn’t know that their car failed brake. The breeze from the truck wanted to throw I and the bike man into the gutter, if not for the man’s skillful driving and grace of God.

“By the time they got to the point where the road was bad, the driver in an attempt to find a way to bring the car to a stop rammed into other stationary trucks.

“People scampered for safety when they heard the sound. The driver and the conductor died on the spot, while others including others suspected to be drivers of other trucks and shop owners got injured. The accident just happened like a flash. It is unfortunate that the driver and the conductor died.”

A source at the Umuahia command of the FRSC who pleaded anonymity called for caution among road users.

The source who stated that the Corps in the state have severally aged drivers to use speed limiters and ensure that their vehicles were roadworthy lamented that most of the road accidents in the country could be avoided if drivers adhere strictly to guidelines guiding safe driving.
