A 75-year old man, Mr Reuben Onwuegbunem and his family have been banished from Orebe village, Amansea in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra state over alleged violation of rules and regulations.

The victim, a father of six, alleged that few elements were behind his banishment, saying his crime was his insistence on his inheritance which he claimed the community threatened to snatch from him.

Narrating his ordeal in tears, Onwuegbunem said his family was earlier attacked by suspected members of local vigilante in the community for reasons yet unknown to him.

He said, “My son was urinating outside the house in the evening when two security men, Ukwa and Friday came and started fighting him. As I rushed out to enquire what the matter was, they started beating me too.

“One of them immediately rang the village bell which attracted other youths who stormed the scene and joined in beating me, my wife and dragging my son on the floor.

“They destroyed all my house property, including my two motorcycles and other valuables, saying that I have been disobeying the rules in the community.

“The only crime I committed is because i asked them to leave my land inheritance for me as the only surviving son of my father.”

Onwuegbunem who said he had severally reported the matter to the Police, alleged that the President General was aware of his predicament, appealing to government and security agents to come his aid by visiting the area to ascertain the true situation of the matter.

The wife, Mrs Ngozi Onwuegbu said life had been unbearable for her family since she ran to her father’s village for safety.

“I went to process garri in my husband’s village, some youths met me saying they dont want to see me there again. I parked my cassava and ran back to my father’s house in confusion,” she said.

Reacting, a community leader from Umuokpala village, Chief Cosmos Okonkwor expressed worry over the development, describing it as strange.

“Honestly this thing is strange to me. I’ve tried calling on the Orebe chairman of the village and others to meet and settle this matter to no avail. We need government urgent intervention to guarantee safety of lives and property,” he said.

He said, “The rules and regulations in my village were set even by the same man who has been violating them. All we want is peace and progress in our town. We cant support evil at all. How can one person be having issues with the entire village all the time? He is an adult and must do what is right.”
