Member representing Isiukwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha has paid the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) registration fees for students in Isiukwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency worth ₦12,450,500.
Presenting the cheques to the principals and students of the schools, Onyejeocha said that it is through education that the younger ones will be encouraged to be more useful to both the society and their parents.
She stressed that the era of students dropping out of schools because of examination fees are over within her constituency.
Onyejeocha who also has a scholarship scheme for indigent students which has produced many employed graduates in Isiukwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency said that the payment of WASSCE fees for students will go a long way in changing the lives of her people.
She also said that the process will help to end the undue advantage some persons take on indigent vulnerable girls who want to go to school, but lacked the resources to do so.
“I took a statistics of people in public schools within my Constituency. You’ll be shocked to see that most public schools don’t have anybody registered because of money.
“I discovered that during examination periods, the people who can afford will take their children to private schools. While those who don’t have, but want to write exams will drop out.
“We took the number of students who are qualified for WASSCE, but have not registered due to lack of money and those are the people we’re giving out their cheques today.
“That was how we took note of 14 schools. We also included two schools that are not public schools because they are the schools where I began my secondary school because I changed school in class-3.
“For me, this is what representation is all about. I come every month, I speak to them. I see and feel their pains. You don’t stay in Abuja and say you’re representing them.
“For me, I’m preoccupied with how to redeem all the promises I made to my Constituency from the platform of APC. I told them that APC is not a bad party I urged them to vote me and see what I can do from APC.”
Speaking on behalf of principals and students of public schools in Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency, Mr. John Iheonu, principal, Nneato Secondary described the gesture as the best democratic dividends for parents and students.
He said, “We lack words to show our gratitude. This has changed the fortunes of so many families that have no hope of their children writing this year’s WASSCE.
“Each year boys and girls drop out of school due to inability to pay their examination fees and school fees. Some of the people that dropped without proper education go into crimes like armed robbery.
“Some of the girls go into prostitution because they can’t find anything to do. Today, somebody has taken a bold step towards reducing insecurity through education. Today, a new chapter has been opened. Our prayer is that Good will continue to bless her.”
