A member of an armed robbery gang terrorizing residents and visitors along Port Harcourt road, in Aba South LGA of Abia State has been gunned down by security operatives in Aba.
The body of the deceased was abandoned at No.1 Port Harcourt Road in front of one of the commercial banks in the area.
It was gathered that the majority of the bank customers who feared being arrested while the body of the deceased lay in front of the bank avoided using the bank’s Automated Teller Machine for fear of arrest.
Some of the respondents leaving working the vicinity told our reporter that the management of the bank had put a call to the police to come and evacuate the body of the deceased following the negative effect the body of the deceased to their business.
According to one of the residents who simply gave his name as Frank, dispossession of people’s valuables along No.1 Ngwa road and the entire stretch of Port Harcourt road has been recurring decimal as hoodlums take advantage of loneliness of the area and ongoing reconstruction work on Port Harcourt road to steal from innocent residents and visitors who may have either missed their way or going home late.
“It has become a common thing here (for hoodlums to steal from members of the public). All most every night, you will hear people screaming of being attacked, robbed and in some cases raped by some boys on their way home.
“I am sure that in two to three days time, another person or group of persons may be attacked or have their property being dispossessed from them.
“What most persons who couldn’t use alternative routes to their houses except Port Harcourt road do is to go in group with some male companions. This they do to avoid being robbed and attacked in the night while they are going home.”
Another respondent who gave his name as Gilbert alleged that most of the robbery incidents were carried out by the members of the “Aro” cult group which has dominance in the area.
“I didn’t witness it, but a friend of mine who was coming back from evening mass told us that the guy and his gang tried robbing some people from evening mass when some security agents on patrol saw what was happening and shot at him and members of his gang.
“He died on the spot while others may have sustained gun injuries.”
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Eneh Okon couldn’t pick his calls when our reporter tried to reach out to him over the incident, at the time of filing the report.
