NO fewer than 14 expectant teenagers and four babies were recovered by Imo State Police Command from a ‘baby’ factory Mma Charity Home at Umunkpeyi Village in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State.
Investigation by this medium revealed that Mrs. Charity who is known abd addressed as Nma has been in this ugly business over the years.
A source in the community told our reporter that past Police Commissioners in Imo and Abia including officers of the Nigerian Army had raided Nma’s home in the past.
According to the source, Police and Soldiers on each visit arrest a lot of pregnant girls and in some cases, boys who claimed that they were being paid to impregnate the girls, adding that the boys claimed that they were paid by Nma according to the sex of the babies after delivery.
The recovery followed the harvesting of a baby from a pregnant mother of twins and 25 year-old Onuwa Grace Nwachukwu, a native of Okwe-Owerre village, Umueze 11 in Ehime Mbano council area of Imo State, by the owner of the fake home, Mrs. Mma Achumba by Caesarian Section.
Briefing journalists in Owerri, the state Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Ladodo, said Nwachukwu was lured to the home in Isiala Ngwa South by a member of the syndicate, Blessing Sunday, who is a native of the village.
He said, “On the 5th day of November, 2019, based on tip off that one Blessing Sunday ‘f’, a steward at Mma Charity Home at Umunkpeyi Village in Isiala Ngwa South council of Abia State had lured an expectant mother to Aba Abia State where a Caesarian Section was carried on her and the newly delivered baby stolen and sold by the owner of the centre, Mrs. Mma Achumba ‘m’ of Umumkpee, while the said Blessing Sunday hurriedly returned her victim to their village in Okwe-Owerre Umueze II of Ehime Mbano still bleeding.
“This angered the youths of the community who descended on Blessing and were about to set her and her family house ablaze before a team of police officers raced to the scene, rescued her from the youths and rushed her to the hospital for treatment while the victim, Onuwa Grace Nwachukwu was rushed to Police Clinic, Owerri where she was admitted for treatment.
“Days after her discharge from the Police Clinic, the victim managed and led the scorpion team to Umunkpeyi Village in Isiala Ngwa South LGA of Abia State, in search of the baby and the owner of the center, Mrs. Mma Achumba the suspect, where a total of Fourteen (14) pregnant ladies and Four (4) children were rescued”.
Ladodo said four of the expectant teens are from Ngor-Okpala council of Imo State, two from Mbiabong in Akwa Ibom State while the rest eight are from Obingwa/Isiala Ngwa and Bende councils of Abia State.
“The victims were kept at the centre waiting for the time they will deliver their babies and the owner of the home pay them money ranging between N300,000 to N350,000 depending on the sex after selling the babies.
“It is worthy to note that these teenagers were kept there without the knowledge and consent of their parents”.
