Online media group vows to checkmate fake news

The leadership of the Abia Online Media Publishers Organization (AOMPO) has reinstated the commitment of the union to checkmate the spread of fake and unverified news among its members.

The chairman of the association, Mr. Ugochukwu Nwankwo speaking during the unveiling the of the association’s constitution at Ever Green Hotels, Ojike Street, Umuahia, the state capital expressed worries over the spread of fake and unverified news by bloggers in the country and stated that it was important for members of the union to verify their news before publishing.

Nwankwo who warned that the union would not take it lightly with any member that indulges in the spread of fake or unverified news contents or using their blogs for vendetta said it was important that members embrace journalism ethics while performing their duties of educating, entertaining and informing their readers using their various platforms.

Though the AOMPO chairman said that the association would not allow members to be intimidated while performing their legitimate duties, he however warned that the leadership would not take it lightly with any member who engages in all manner of unethical practice, hence the setting up of a 5-man Disciplinary Committee members who will treat and recommend sanctions or punishment to be faced by culpable members.

He charged members of the disciplinary committee include Sunday Nwankwo (Chairman), Chinwe Ugele (Secretary), Emenike Iroegbu, Clinton Ubah and Casmir Nwakanma; members to discharge their deities without fear of favour, stating that they were chosen because of their experience in the field of journalism.
