Abia State has been enmeshed with cases of erosion menace in the state with many homes already washed away and many houses being on the brink of being washed away as well.

While the federal government has tried to intervene in coming to the rescue of the state, but with the current situation of things in the state, the situation has continued to grow worse especially as the rains continue to pour down heavily and soils being washed away by water current.

Recently the Minister of State, Ministry of Niger Delta, Professor Claudius Omoleye Daramola was in the state to hand over a completed erosion control project at Okwe Obuohia Obi-Ibere in Ikwuano Local Government Area of state.

That brought relief to the community, but the people of Umunwanwa in Umuahia South Local Government Area of the state are raising alarm over the impending calamity that may soon befell the community if the state and federal government don’t come to their rescue.

A Facebook user David Uzosike took to the social media to share the pictures of an erosion site in Umunwanwa, Umuahia south local government area of Abia state, with the following text attached;

This picture was taken in Umunwanwa community today (yesterday) where erosion has divided the community into two.

Some part of the community can no longer access other communities in the State. So much has been promised by various government so little done to alleviate the environmental catastrophe my peace loving people of Umunwanwa are exposed to.

“It not a lot to ask your government to provide you with a safe and decent road. My people need help now, not tomorrow.

“We implore the  federal and state government to address the erosion  disaster today. You can see that our people and  community is being  cut off from the rest of Abia state. Surely we cannot continue to look the other way. Our fathers, mother  brothers and sisters risk their lives everyday. Many have lost their lives while trying to make this journey. Our place of worship  [St Peter’s Methodist Church] is no longer accessible.  Biko do not look the other way our leaders”.

Meanwhile reports have it that the state governor in the company of his deputy, Ude Okochukwu and others have visited the Isiukwuato community to inspect on the level of damage which the erosion menace has caused the community with the hope that something urgent would be done stop the negative impact on the community.
