The Ibom International Airport State on Tuesday witnessed massive crowd believed to be supporters of the All Progressives Congress and the minority leader of the 8th senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio who came to receive him ahead of his Wednesday’s formal defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after resigning from his position as the minority leader on Monday.
Recall that news about the possible defection of Akpabio gathered momentum at the weekend after pictures of the former Akwa Ibom State Governor with President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and APC leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu emerged on the social media.
The rumours were however confirmed to be true on Monday as the letter of resignation and defection was made public on the social media.
infonet9ja.com gathered that since the news broke officially, there has been troubles in the Akwa Ibom PDP camp with series of meetings going on among stakeholders in the party. There are fears of massive defection among PDP members loyal to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel and Akpabio.
Sources in the state told this medium that Akpabio’s defection may not be unconnected to the frosty relationship between him and the state governor which several attempt to reconcile both former allies by stakeholders of the party in the state failed.
While several analysts have it that the eventual defection of Akpabio would deal a huge blow on the dominance of PDP in the state going by the political influence of Akpabio, others don’t think so, stressing that the Umana Umana and his likes who Akpabio fought to standstill might defect to PDP to team up with Gov. Udom to ensure that they neutralize Sen. Akpabio.
Meanwhile, four Personal Aides to Akpabio have tendered their resignation letters.
The four aides represent the four federal constituencies of Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District.
Their position was disclosed during a meeting of Stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District in Abak. Led by Barr. Utibe Nwoko, Senior Legislative Aide, others are; Chief (Barr) Moses Akpan, Kufre Ini-ima, Prince Ukandu Ukpe.
